Aarhus Harbor is one of Northern Europe's largest ports, featuring the country's largest container terminal. In fact, more than 50% of the containers arriving in Denmark are handled at Aarhus Harbor. The port can accommodate the world's largest container ships, and a significant portion of the food and non-food products imported and exported to and from Denmark pass through Aarhus Harbor.
The harbor area in Aarhus is not solely used as an industrial port. A brand new district is under construction, where modern architecture sharply contrasts with the industrial part of the harbor. Within a few years, approximately 7,000 people will have moved into the new buildings, and 12,000 additional jobs will have been created at Aarhus Harbor. This development is also known as "the urban harbor areas," with the goal of connecting the city and the water to create an attractive and recreational area. The new center of life at Aarhus Harbor is the impressive Dokk1 multimedia house, which, among other things, houses the city's library and citizen services.
