The Opera House is clad in yellow Jura limestone from southern Germany, and the foyer is adorned with Perlatino marble from Sicily. The ceiling of the main auditorium is decorated with 105,000 gold leaves, equivalent to one and a half kilos of 24-carat gold.
The Opera House is a gift to the Danish people from the A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation for General Purposes. The building was designed by renowned Danish architect Henning Larsen, and several Danish artists contributed to its decoration. Per Kirkeby created four bronze reliefs, and Olafur Eliasson designed the three large light sculptures in the foyer.
