Sct. Bendt’s Church in Ringsted is one of Denmark’s most significant medieval churches and the country’s first royal church. The current brick church was consecrated in 1170 during the Great Church Festival, when Knud Lavard was canonised.
During the Middle Ages, the church served as a monastery church for the Benedictine monks and became the burial church for the Valdemar dynasty from 1182 to 1341. The church houses both noble and royal tombs, and among its unique treasures is the Dagmar Cross – a Byzantine relic cross from around the year 1000. The beautiful frescoes date from the 13th and 14th centuries, and the building stands as an important testament to Denmark’s history and Christian heritage.
